The choice to see one of our infertility specialists is one of your most important treatment decisions. Studies show that patients who see an infertility specialist are more likely to become pregnant in less time at lower cost. It is particularly important that women over the age of 35, or those with reduced ovarian reserve, see an infertility specialist as soon as possible. Fertility can decline very rapidly in these groups and "time" is definitely the enemy of fertility.
Fertility specialist care is no different that other disciplines such as neurosurgery, cardiology, orthopedics, etc. You would not visit your general practitioner to remove a brain tumor rather you would choose a specialist with extensive training. Infertility often has numerous causes and all must be ruled out, especially male factor. Infertility specialists, like all specialists, focus their studies on the latest advances in their field and are continually updating their knowledge by studying journals, attending seminars, and undergoing additional training throughout their careers.
Infertility specialist care is usually less expensive because the appropriate treatments are administered quickly and if one treatment fails another will be implemented. For example, fertility specialists usually keep appropriate patients on Clomid for 3-6 months and then move to the next treatment phase contrary to some non specialists who will keep patients on Clomid for extended periods often for a year or longer. Also, the percentage of patients who will require advanced reproductive technologies is small as most patients achieve pregnancy using "first line" treatments such as fertility drugs and/or IUI.
